Carbon steel casting specializes in using carbon steel, steel with a carbon concentration between 0.02% and 2%. It has the highest production volume compared to other metal castings. From machinery to automotive and railway parts, carbon steel castings support the development of the industrial world.
Overall it has great mechanical properties and is cheaper than stainless steel casting. In carbon steel casting, the carbon content acts as a key ingredient that determines the steel’s toughness. After heat treatment, steel with higher carbon content becomes stronger and more resistant to wear, making it a go-to choice for more demanding industries.
As an experienced carbon steel casting manufacturer, our quality controls guarantee industry-standard excellence in every casting.
Generally, there are low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, and high-carbon steel casting.
Here are the most common carbon steel casting grades. As a leading carbon steel company, we have experience in all carbon steel grades production.
| CARBON STELL GRADE | DESCRIPTION | APPLICATION |
|---|---|---|
| 1018 | mild steel(low carbon steel) , strong and ductile, has good weldability properties | crimping, bending, swaging, worms, pins, gears, dowels, tool holders, machine parts, pinions, ratchets, etc. |
| 1020 | suitable for surface hardening, high carbon steel, hardened, and welded | hydraulic shafts, motor shafts, pump shafts, machinery parts |
| 1030 | high carbon steel, has moderate hardness and strength, machineable, ductile | machinery parts, used in the tempered and quenched condition for strength |
| 1035 | low carbon steel, suitable for induction hardening and flame | used for forged parts, links, gears, couplings, forged shafts and axles |
| 1040 | has good strength, wear resistance, high carbon steel | forged couplings and crankshafts |
| 1045 | low carbon steel, can be forged satisfactorily, most common shafting steel | induction hardening applications, medium strength parts, shafts for pneumatic and hydraulic cylinders |
| 1050 | high carbon steel, readily welded and machined | forged shafts and gears |
| 1060 | standard grade carbon steel | used for forged applications |
| 1065 | high carbon steel, has high tensile strength, heat treatable | blades and cutlery |
| 1144 | low carbon steel, a higher-strength alloy than A36 and 1018, has improved ductility | used for parts requiring mechanical properties obtained by heat treating |
| 11L14 | high carbon steel, has enhanced machinability, stronger than 1018 | used for forged applications |
| 12L14 | high carbon steel, has enhanced machinability, stronger than 1018 | screw machines, couplings, inserts, bushings, and hydraulic hose fittings |
Carbon steel investment casting is the traditional investment casting method pouring carbon steel material. In recent years, we have undergone massive updates and upgrades, to adopt the most advanced silica sol shell making technology. We have also introduced an innovative process that combines coated sand with shell making, further optimizing the shell making process to reduce production time and improve surface finish. Carbon steel investment casting parts typically include examples like carbon steel investment casting railway parts and carbon steel auto parts.
Carbon steel castings produced through the sand casting technique are known as cast carbon steel sand castings. In the sand casting process, different foundries choose different sand mold materials based on customer performance requirements, such as silica sand, resin sand, pearl sand, expanded sand, etc. Dawang mainly uses resin sand and pearl sand, which are famous for their uniform particles and good fire resistance, suitable for high-temperature and high performance casting scenarios.
Carbon steel shell casting is a new carbon steel casting method using shell molding. The shell casting production line in Dawang runs with comprehensive automation to ensure our production efficiency and product quality. The equipments setup is the state-of-art in Asia. Our monthly production capacity is up to 800 tons, and the workshop is capable of producing large carbon steel castings of up to 200 kilograms.
The post cleaning workshop of Dawang factory is equipped with advanced blasting machines and cutting tools. After grit blasting, we currently have a team of 20 skilled workers dedicated to cutting and finishing work for removing gates and runners. Whether dealing with large or small items, our workers demonstrate excellent skills to inspect quality of every carbon steel casting piece and provide customers with great end-product with excellent surface finish.
Our fully-owned machining factory operates 25+ CNC machines, providing much flexibility for carbon steel casting components to be machined according to drawings. Our skilled technical workers bring years of experience to achieve high accuracy, and high efficiency. This commitment to quality attributes to our in-house machining capability, reducing the complexity of working with multiple vendors and extended delivery schedules.
Dawang Foundry prioritize quality assurance in carbon steel casting through our certified inspection processes. We are fully equipped with inspection and testing facilities, including CMM, RT, ISIR, X-Ray, and more. We ensure rigorous and precise evaluations of our carbon steel casting products.

Carbon steel is an alloy with a carbon percentage of 0.02% to 2.1%. Cast iron generally has a carbon content higher than 2.2%. They have very different mechanical properties. In terms of mechanical performance, due to the difference in carbon content, carbon steel has better toughness. In contrast, cast iron has higher hardness and wear-resistance,. We could provide consultation to our customers on which material is best for your project!
Mild steel refers to steel with 0.15 to 0.25 percent carbon and not many additional alloying components. Mild steel and low-carbon steel are both iron-based metals. Mild steel contains higher amounts of carbon than low-carbon steel. More than half of the common carbon steel products are mild steel casting. Like some mild steel casting samples shown above, Dawang provides you with various mild steel products. Regarding mild steel cost, we will provide you with a satisfactory price. The reason for the pores is that there is too much water in the molding material or a lot of gas – producing substances; the air permeability of molding sand and core sand is poor; the pouring speed is too fast.
The causes of blisters include insufficient molding sand strength; insufficient molding sand compactness; and too fast pouring speed.
The cause of shrinkage cavity is poor feeding of the casting during solidification.
The cause of sticky sand is the poor fire resistance of the molding sand or the high pouring temperature.
The causes of the cracks are the large difference in the wall thickness of the castings; the improper setting of the gating system; the new difference between the sand mold and the core.
Carbon steel casting grades are divided into three subgroups according to the carbon content of the metal: Low carbon steel castings/Mild steels (up to 0.3% carbon), Medium carbon steel castings(0.3–0.6% carbon), and High carbon steel castings (more than 0.6% carbon).
